The Roller Hawks maintained their dominance over the Hawks in their head-to-head match-up but having fun was the most important part of the KidsWish Charity Match at the Snakepit Stadium on the weekend.
More than 300 spectators flocked to the stadium in Wollongong for the second annual event which raised more than $5000 to support KidsWish in our mission of fulfilling the lives of children living with disability or illness and their families through supportive programs, special events and community-impact projects.
There were more than 30 performers from KidsWish programs and The Disability Trust entertaining the crowd before and during the on-court contests with another 30-plus volunteers doing their part to ensure the event ran smoothly.
The Roller Hawks beat Hawks convincingly in the first match before the teams were mixed around to even it up.
The Rockits rock band entertained guests as they arrived at the start of the event and there were basketball activities for kids to take part in before the matches on the main court.
The KidsGroove performers stole the show with their Tarzan dance and all the Hawks and Roller Hawks players joined them for an impromptu group photo after their performance.
KidsWish Stakeholder Engagement and Fundraising Manager Emily Wright paid tribute to the Hawks and Roller Hawks organisations, particularly the players, for making the event such a memorable occasion.
“Although one of the primary goals was originally to raise funds for KidsWish, I believe this event has become so much more than that,” Emily said.
“It has become a celebration of disability and inclusivity, with amazing opportunities for the kids we support to showcase their skills and be embraced by the community.
“And I believe it is helping to grow the community’s appreciation and passion for wheelchair basketball.”
KidsWish would like to extend a big thank you to His Boy Elroy for the VIP catering, as well as Falcones Bakery and JB Metro for their donations in support of the barbecue.
We’d love to hear how yourself or someone you know has been impacted by KidsWish.
